From the Editor's Desk
Welcome to the Fall 2000 issue of Michi Online: Journal
of Japanese Cultural Arts! Despite the fact that
websites seem to disappear with unusual rapidity, we're
still here, working to bring you new and interesting
information about traditional Japanese arts and spiritual
Ways.
You probably noticed that the first couple issues heavily
featured the writing of myself and other members of the
Sennin Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors and Advisors.
This was something of a necessity since we were just
getting started. But as the word about Michi Online
has slowly spread, more and more of you have been offering
us well-written submissions. It's a trend that we hope
will continue in the future.
In this issue, we're featuring more than one writer new
to Michi Online. Mr. Vinayak Bharne has penned
"Perceptions of the Shadowy World," a fascinating
article on the spirit, aesthetics, and meaning behind
classical Japanese architecture. And Mr. Joseph R.
Svinth has written a well-researched historical account
of judo's early development in the Northwestern part
of the USA. We're hoping that these are just the first
of many Michi Online articles from these two
gentlemen. And, of course, we have a number of other
features in this issue that we think you'll enjoy as
well.
You'll also find a video review of Taira Shinken:
Father of Ryukyu Kobudo in this issue. We're
planning on publishing regular book and video reviews,
so if you've got a book or video to promote, please
send promotional copies our way. We'd be happy to
consider them for review.
As always, we're adding new entries to our Michi Links
section and to our glossary of terms found in Japanese
arts and Ways. It appears that Michi Links is one of
our most popular features. If you enjoy surfing through
the several hundred links we offer, perhaps you could
help us by bringing any dead links to our attention.
Michi Online is nonprofit in nature and staffed
entirely by volunteers. We'd really appreciate everyone's
help with the maintenance of Michi Links. Found a neat
website that seems right up our alley? Let us know.
Found a Michi Link that leads right to a dead end? Let
us know as well. It will help us to better serve you
the reader, by freeing up our time, so we can work on
getting Michi Online out more quickly and
regularly.
As usual, my thanks to Kevin Heard Sensei, webmaster
of Michi Online, as well as to our writers,
Sennin Foundation Board members, and our readers. Look
for the next issue soon. We've already got some new
ideas and interesting articles.
