shakuhachi
The shakuhachi is a flute that first came to Japan from China in the eighth-century. The form of the shakuhachi that is most prevalent today arrived in Japan in the thirteenth-century, coming again from China. A shakuhachi is basically a flute that features five holes, and which has certain associations with Buddhism.
