shamisen
The shamisen is one of Japan’s most popular classical musical instruments. Another Chinese import, it came to Japan by way of Okinawa in the middle of the sixteenth-century. Shamisen of varying sizes are used to play different forms of music, and they are plucked with a large “pick,” which is gripped in the palm of one’s hand.
