sumo
Sumo is said to have been enjoyed by various hoary Shinto gods; and since the sixth century, it has been popular among Japanese mortals as well. It is, in fact, one of the most beloved sports in Japan, yet it still retains certain mystical overtones.
Serious sumo-tori, or wrestlers, start training as teenagers, eat a special weight and muscle-building food called chanko-nabe, and practice several hours each day.
