From the Editor's Desk
Welcome to the Spring 2000 issue of Michi Online: Journal
of Japanese Cultural Arts. We're a bit late getting
this one out, but for once, being late has a positive side
to it. This is the biggest issue yet; it took more time
to produce, and as the result, you have more interesting
information to read through.
We've got Dave Lowry's story on the relationship between
Japanese flower arrangement and martial arts. Excerpts
from a great book on suiseki art stones by Felix Rivera,
as well as a selection from Steve Fabian Sensei's new
book Clearing Away Clouds, are also to be found.
I've written about the life and teachings of Nakamura
Tempu Sensei, the father of yoga in Japan, and we've got
even more neat stuff as well. Check it out, and I think
you'll agree that Michi Online is steadily improving.
The response to Michi Online has been great. We
were a little concerned when we first started this venture
as to whether or not we'd have enough submissions to
produce a quarterly journal. It turns out that as I
write this, we've had to reassign some of the material
from the spring issue to the summer one. It would have
been too big otherwise. (But don't think this means we
don't need new articles--we do. If you have something
you think other readers of this journal might enjoy,
please take a look at our submission policies in the
Fine Print section of
this issue. We'd love to hear from you.)
What's more, despite the fact that we haven't done much
to advertise Michi Online, we're getting quite
a few hits. Far more than we ever expected to be getting
at this stage in the game. Plus, Michi Links has a
counter that indicates how many links are currently
available. Take a look at it from time to time, as we're
always adding new entries. However, we've got close to
1000 links at this point, and as all you dedicated web
surfers know, amateur websites get extinguished faster
than candles on a birthday cake. So if your site moves,
dies, or in some way changes, please let us know. Moreover,
if you find any dead links, send us a quick e-mail as well.
We'd appreciate your help with this, because due to our
large number of links, it's hard to stay 100% on top of
this. And Michi Online is sponsored by a nonprofit
organization. (To be read this way: We're doing this for
free and in our increasingly limited spare time.)
Want to help out with Michi Online? Send us e-mail
with your ideas. Or just send us something to publish.
You can also send us a copy of your book for a book review.
Of course, we can't publish or review everything, but we're
very interested in seeing your submissions.
Want to help yourself and Michi Online at the same
time? Donations to the Sennin Foundation, Inc. are
tax-deductible. If you like, we'll be happy to mention
your name and/or the name of your business in the next
issue.
Know anything about grants? We received a couple small
ones, which helped us launch this website, but sadly,
the money doesn't last forever. We'd be interested in
anyone's help, insights, or advice concerning grants.
We're still working on some of the other features of
Michi Online. As always, keep checking back.
We all appreciate the interest, submissions, and help
that we've received with this site, and we'll do our
best to keep offering up the best in Japanese arts and
Ways. I would like to offer special thanks to Michael
Souders for his assistance in producing this issue of
Michi Online.
